Instead, it focuses on simplicity and ease of use. Notion is an app that has become popular for good reason. Custom Notion templates
Upon signing up, a template gallery is available. These awesome templates can be added to the workspace, so that you can work with them, modify them, edit them the way you want or remove them as you like.
Click on the ‘Templates’ visible on your left sidebar. You will get a template block, i.e, list of select-able template categories, like

For example as a student, if you select ‘Student’ category, you will be surprised to see that there is a whole lot choice of templates available.😄

If you take Class Notes by clicking on ‘use this template button’, you will see there are bunch of notes documents. So you can create your own notes, add bookmarks, images, video, table of contents. And share it with your classmates or professors.
How to set Notion workspace
On the left side bar, click the + Add a page, a new untitled Notion workspace/dashboard will be created as shown below:
Rename it as you like, for example, you can write ‘Dashboard’ or ‘My workspace’ or ‘Home’ or ‘Workspace’ or ‘Notion workspace’ or ‘Projects workspace’, it is up to your liking. Then start customizing it, like selecting an icon. And inserting categories into it simply by typing the category name. Like in the case below, ‘Personal’ is written to create my personal life category. Just type the name of the category and select it as Heading 1 or Heading 2 or Heading 3.
Once you have your list of categories, add sub categories to them, can be seen clearly in the picture below.
Create template depending on the content
To make it more explanatory and simple, just take the Health category from workspace, click on the 6-dotted icon in front of sub-category Fitness tracker.
A menu will appear, select ‘Turn into’ -> Page.
Click on the ‘Fitness tracker’, an empty new page will open with the heading as ‘Fitness tracker’. Here select ‘Table’ from ‘DATABASE’ category.
Upon selecting the ‘Table’ , a new empty table will show up. Now just customize the table as you like, just for example, put name of days on which you want to track your fitness, add corresponding parameters on other column and rows of the table. In this way a complete fully customized fitness tracker can be added to the dashboard as per liking or requirements.
A cover image can be added to the dashboard as well.
How to create custom Notion templates step by step with screenshots?
To compare the difference between template from scratch and custom templates from Notion, follow the step guide to utilize one of the template in Notion.
Now that the Notion workspace which is renamed as ‘Dashboard’ looks ready to roll on. Let’s move to the templates in Notion. Click on the left sidebar on the ‘Templates’.
Select any template from any category you like. Since we tried to create a ‘Fitness tracker’ above by using a table, so in this case we are going to select ‘Habit tracker’. So that we can understand the difference between the two approaches, and to see the ease of doing stuff by using and customizing the provided Notion built-in templates.
Once ‘Habit tracker’ is selected, by clicking use as template button. It will be shown in the main window, and in the left sidebar it will be show below the ‘Dashboard’. Move this ‘Habit Tracker’ in left sidebar to ‘Dashboard’ by drag n drop. If its successful, it won’t appear in the sidebar now. Just click on the ‘Dashboard’ and move ‘Habit Tracker’ as you like. In our case it should be placed under ‘Health’ category.
Now open ‘Habit Tracker’ by clicking on it from ‘Dashboard’.
‘Habit Tracker’ can be fully customized to one’s liking or can be used as it is. We are going to change/rename ‘Journaling’ column to ‘Digital planner’, as shown below.
Then new columns can be added, their type can be changed, or a new to-do list can be created, there is a whole lot of possibilities. Create a new column and write ‘No Smoking’ as title for tracking this habit. As the it is based on text field, we will change it to check box type, for one-time tasks, as shown in the screenshot below.
We can also create database templates. If a new team member joins, his notion workspace can be loaded with our team database templates with just few clicks. Once you have mastered the art of creating your own customized templates, these digital assets can be sold as Gumroad product or on any other digital platform depending on the customer requirements.
